‘Only 12% students in TN go for higher studies' | | | The New Indian Express

CHENNAI: Only 12 percent of students who passed Plus Two this academic year in TN had the opportunity to pursue higher education, Madras University Vice Chancellor
G Thiruvasagam has said.

Speaking at a State-level educational summit organised by St John’s International Residential School, he said, “out of 7.5 lakh students who appeared for higher secondary exams, 5 lakh passed. But among the 5 lakh only 12 pc have the privilege of pursuing higher studies. We have to find out what happens to the rest.”

We have failed to motivate a large number of students to take up higher education due to various reasons,” he said.

Quoting a study done by the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, the Vice Chancellor said, “94 per cent of parents send their children to college so that they land up good employment opportunities. Only one per cent of parents send their children to college for mere degrees and associated respect.

“Education hence should ensure employment. But we have not been successful in ensuring that in Tamil Nadu yet,” he said.

Speaking at the same function, Asish Rajpal, CEO of iDiscoveri Services, said that the country must move on from the factory production system of education to personalised learning to develop better citizens.
